Ingredients

Alert:  My soap will help keep you clean! 🤷‍♀️

💕 This is the only claim that I can make about my soap 💕

Many of the ingredients I use in my soap all claim they have certain properties of which I cannot validate, for example french green clay is said to be anti-inflammatory but I will not make claims that my soap made with french green clay will help as an anti-inflammatory agent.  I wanted to give you some reasons why soapmakers use many different products so I just looked up a couple of resources I use for making soap and have added them here so you would have an idea why soapmakers have so much fun picking ingredients.

This list of ingredients is a work in progress!

Oils

Olive Oil – is known for it’s anti-aging properties and works well with all skin types.  Olive oil promotes healthy skin and is vitamin-rich.

Hemp  Oil – This oil is said to have numerous benefits for your skin such as anti-aging properties and hemp oil is said to be good for eczema.  The oil is packed with Omega oils and said to be very moisturizing.  Works well in many skin care products.

Coconut oil –  Coconut oil in soap is said to be a great moisturizer for the skin and hair.  Properties of coconut oil are said to remove dead skin cells and dirt, prevent or reduce acne and firm up your skin (now who doesn’t want that!)

Avocado Oil –  is said to be valued for regenerative and moisturizing properties.. This oil itself is rich in vitamins A, B, D and E as well as lecithin, potassium, protein, beta carotene and amino acids.

Fats

Lard – Soap made with lard is not vegan friendly.  Lard (that I use) is rendered from pig fat.  Lard gives soap it’s firmness, creamy lather, and conditioning properties.  I use lard in place of Palm Oil in some soaps.

Tallow – soooooo reading about these ingredients is very interesting so here it is  –  Tallow is beef fat (there are other animals fats used also besides beef).  Tallow is said to be similar to human fat (pretty yucky) so it makes a great moisturizing soap.  Tallow has been used forever in soap (basically in the ancient days soap was made from ashes and fat), it makes a long-lasting bar of soap.

Butters

Shea Butter – it said that shea butter has many benefits in soap, such as,

  • gentle on the skin
  • great for sensitive skin
  • soothing properties
  • moisturizing

Cocoa Butter

Kokum Butter

Mango Butter

Avocado Butter

Coffee Butter

Clay

French Green Clay – it is said that french green clay has anti-inflammatory as well as antiseptic properties.  It is said to detoxify your skin, clean pores, act as an exfoliant, controls oil, and helps to firm your skin.  French Green Clay adds a light green color to the soap.

Brazilian and Kaolin Clays – These clays are 100% natural and said to remove impurities and dead skin cells.  Reduce oiliness, has a firming effect, and enhance blood circulation.  Clays come in a variety of colors such as, purple, yellow, and rose to name a few.

Natural Colorants

Spirulina –  makes the soap have a nice green color.  It is said that spirulina has skin benefits because it is algae rich in vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants.

Annatto Seeds – This powder can make your soap a vary of colors between yellow and orange depending of the usage.

Indigo Powder – is a natural henna often used to color hair naturally.  This turns the soap blue – gray in color.

Food in Soap

Cucumber – Some people say that cucumber is good in soap because it is packed with vitamins such as C and various B vitamins.

Bananas – It is said that bananas are rich in nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants that have moisturizing properties.   It is said that bananas can help rejuvenating dry skin.

Other Ingredients

Vitamin E Beads  – in products are said to add hydrating benefits for your skin
